Domes Lake Algarve

Vilamoura offers an easy introduction to the Algarve. Instead of staying in an isolated resort, you are near a large marina filled with restaurants, cafés, shops and boats, while Praia da Falésia stretches west beneath dramatic copper and red cliffs. The much older Algarve appears almost next door at Cerro da Vila, where the remains of a Roman maritime villa include baths, mosaics and evidence of an ancient trading port.

A seven-night stay is long enough to go farther. Loulé offers a more traditional inland town; the broader Algarve adds cliff-backed beaches, old towns and nature. To the east, Ria Formosa is a 60-kilometer system of lagoons, salt marshes, barrier islands and bird habitat that can be explored on foot or by boat.

We would not spend all seven days inside the resort. Two or three exploration days give families a much better sense of southern Portugal, while still leaving plenty of pool and beach time.

Praia da Falésia — 2–4 hrs: Beach time beneath the Algarve’s red cliffs; best for almost any age. Ocean conditions matter.

Vilamoura Marina — 1–3 hrs: Easy stroll, boats, dinner and ice cream; particularly good after a slower resort day.

Cerro da Vila — 1–1½ hrs: Roman baths, mosaics and ruins about five minutes on foot from the marina. Children through 13 enter free.

Family Golf Park — 1–2 hrs: Mini golf is an easy break from beaches and sightseeing.

Aquashow — half/full day: Water attractions close to Vilamoura; the indoor park reopens October 1, 2026. Check the outdoor calendar before booking.

Zoomarine — full day: Marine-life exhibits plus family attractions in Guia; check the 2026 calendar before choosing your date.

Ria Formosa — half day: Boat or nature outing for birds, lagoons and salt-marsh scenery; excellent for curious older children.

Morning: Pool/KiEPOS. Afternoon: Rest or spa rotation. Evening: Italian dinner.

Day 5: Algarve History
Morning: Cerro da Vila. Afternoon: Loulé. Evening: Resort.

Day 6: Big Family Day
Full day: Zoomarine, subject to operating calendar.

For families who want both the beach and sightseeing, May–June and September–early October offer an attractive balance. September around Faro averages highs near 79°F; October around 74°F. By November, average daytime highs fall to roughly 67°F and nighttime temperatures near 53°F, while rainfall becomes more frequent. November sea temperatures are around 64°F, so swimming in the Atlantic may feel cold even on a sunny afternoon.

July and August bring the strongest beach weather but also peak holiday crowds and typically higher summer pricing. Fall becomes better for walking and exploring, and Portugal’s tourism board specifically points to September through June as pleasant months for Algarve walking and cycling.

For fall trips, pack for both sunny afternoons and cool evenings rather than treating the Algarve as guaranteed winter heat.

Fly into Faro. It is the closest airport; Marriott lists it about 25 km from the resort. A transfer works well if you mainly want Vilamoura, but a rental car is useful for several Algarve day trips.

Ask about the toll device. Portugal has both conventional and electronic motorway tolls. Rental companies may provide an electronic payment device; understand the charges before leaving the airport.

Reserve children's programs. Domes specifically recommends advance booking for the kids club; care for children under four may carry an additional fee.

Request the right room, not just “family friendly.” A two-bedroom Family Retreat or Residence gives substantially more privacy than adding sleeping space to a standard room.

For U.S. travelers: Portugal is in the Schengen Area. Current U.S. guidance says passports should be valid at least three months beyond the stay; ETIAS is planned for late 2026, so recheck requirements before travel. 

Kids club: KiEPOS Club is complimentary for ages 4–12, with reservations required. Younger-child care is available at an additional cost.

Pools: The outdoor pool is heated from mid-September to mid-May, up to approximately 25°C/77°F depending on weather. The spa’s indoor heated pool and relaxation area are for guests 16+.

Meals: Do not assume this is an all-inclusive stay. Breakfast is available, but Marriott notes that it may carry a fee; inclusions depend on your booked rate.

Seasonal attractions: Check Aquashow and Zoomarine operating calendars for your exact dates before building the trip around them.

Room occupancy: Family rooms, suites and residences differ substantially in capacity. Confirm the exact category before booking rather than assuming every “family” room fits the same number of guests. 

Domes Lake Algarve is a strong choice for families who want more than a traditional beach-resort week. You can spend slow mornings by the pool or on Praia da Falésia, walk to Vilamoura Marina for dinner, and still have easy access to water parks, historic sites, coastal scenery, and nature experiences throughout the Algarve.

The resort is especially appealing for families who like having plenty to do without feeling pressured to fill every day. Younger children have the kids club and pools, while older children can enjoy beach days, mini golf, boating, water parks, and exploring beyond the resort.

For the best balance of weather, crowds, and value, we would look closely at September and October. Just remember that fall weather becomes less predictable as the season progresses, so families hoping for guaranteed hot beach days may prefer an earlier travel window.

Overall, this is the kind of trip that works well when you want equal parts resort relaxation and European adventure.
