Why it made this week's list

Washington becomes especially appealing as summer heat begins to fade. By October, normal daytime temperatures are around the 60s and 70s, which can make long days on the National Mall much easier than midsummer.

There is also a second reason to look now: Gaylord National’s 2026 Christmas season begins November 14, well within the next few months. This year’s ICE! attraction features How the Grinch Stole Christmas! and runs through January 3, 2027.

That creates two very different opportunities: a fall history-and-museums trip with pleasant walking weather, or a late-November/December stay combining Washington sightseeing with a full holiday resort experience. Families tied to school schedules should expect Thanksgiving and December weekends to be busier.

Why families may like it

Washington works unusually well for families because many of its biggest attractions are free. Smithsonian museums, the National Mall and its memorials can fill several days without adding major admission costs.

Gaylord National adds something downtown hotels generally cannot: room to slow down. After several hours of museums, you can return to an indoor pool, huge climate-controlled atrium, restaurants, arcade and National Harbor waterfront rather than squeezing another attraction into the day.

Elementary-age children through teens have the broadest range of options, while younger children can enjoy the National Children’s Museum and shorter monument outings.

The drawback is location. National Harbor is outside downtown Washington, so you cannot simply walk from your room to the Smithsonian museums. Plan for rideshare, driving or other transportation on sightseeing days.

Hotel overview

Gaylord National sits directly on the Potomac in Maryland’s National Harbor. Its defining feature is the enormous 19-story glass atrium, kept around 72°F year-round and overlooking the river.

Rooms include king and queen/queen configurations plus suites, with some categories overlooking the atrium or Potomac. Families wanting more space or a particular view should compare exact room categories before booking.

The indoor recreation pool and whirlpool are particularly useful after sightseeing, and children also have access to an arcade and an augmented-reality wildlife experience. Adults can use the 24-hour fitness center, morning yoga or book treatments at Relâche Spa.

Dining ranges from Old Hickory to the casual Potomac District Café & Market. Harbor Social adds duckpin bowling, while Capital Confectionery is an easy dessert stop.

This is a large convention resort, so the atmosphere can change when major groups are in-house. It also is not a downtown sightseeing hotel. Its strength is giving your family a resort-style place to return to after exploring Washington.

Best for

Families with elementary-age children: Air & Space, monuments, the zoo and interactive museums offer plenty of variety. Younger children may tire from Washington’s extensive walking.

Families with teenagers: History, aviation, espionage, monuments and National Harbor provide more variety than a trip aimed only at small children.

Multigenerational families: The resort gives grandparents and children places to relax while more energetic family members explore. Just plan transportation carefully.

Holiday-loving families: From November 14, Gaylord’s Christmas programming can turn the hotel into part of the vacation rather than simply a place to sleep. Some holiday activities require separate tickets.

Families wanting only a walkable city stay: This is the weaker fit. Most major D.C. sights require a ride from National Harbor.

Destination guide

Washington D.C.

Washington is one of the easiest U.S. cities in which to mix sightseeing with genuinely educational experiences. Around the National Mall, families can move between the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, Capitol views and multiple Smithsonian museums without paying admission at many stops. The memorial grounds themselves are open 24 hours, making an evening monument walk especially appealing.

For children, the newly fully reopened National Air and Space Museum is a major draw; admission remains free, although timed-entry passes are required.

Do not limit the trip to the Mall. The National Zoo gives families another free day option, while Mount Vernon adds a very different look at early American history. National Harbor itself offers waterfront walks, restaurants and the 180-foot Capital Wheel.

Gaylord National is roughly 10 miles from several central Washington attractions according to Marriott. Traffic can make the actual trip feel much longer at busy times, so group downtown activities together rather than commuting back and forth repeatedly.

Things to do with children

National Air & Space Museum — 2–4 hrs: Aircraft and spacecraft are excellent for roughly ages 5+. Free timed pass required. About 10 miles from Gaylord.

National Mall & Memorials — 2–4 hrs: Free, outdoors and easy to tailor to attention spans. Evening is especially atmospheric.

American History Museum — 2–3 hrs: Familiar objects make American history more approachable for school-age children. Free; no ticket required.

National Zoo — 3–5 hrs: Giant pandas and other animals give children a break from museums. Free entry pass required.

National Children’s Museum — 2–3 hrs: Hands-on STEAM play is strongest for younger children. Paid admission; closed Tuesdays.

Capital Wheel — 30–60 min: Climate-controlled gondolas rise 180 feet above the Potomac. Walkable from the hotel.

Mount Vernon — 3–5 hrs: Scavenger hunts and family maps make the historic estate more engaging for children.

Best time to visit

For most families, late September through October offers the best balance. Early October normal highs begin around the mid-70s, substantially more comfortable for long walks than Washington’s hot, humid summer.

Spring is another excellent sightseeing season, especially around cherry-blossom time, although popular weekends can be crowded and hotel prices may rise.

November gets cooler but adds a completely different reason to stay here: Gaylord’s Christmas season begins November 14 in 2026. Holiday weekends can become destinations themselves, so book popular dates and ticketed experiences earlier.

Winter can be cold enough to change outdoor plans, while July and August often mean heat and humidity. Rain is possible in every season, making Washington’s indoor museums useful backup plans.

Best overall: Late September–October
Best value: Selected fall and winter weekdays outside holidays
Best weather: Spring and early fall
Best for fewer crowds: Non-holiday weekdays in fall/winter
Period to approach carefully: Peak summer heat and major holiday weekends

Family travel tips

Fly into DCA when practical. Reagan National is the closest major airport; Marriott lists it about 6.9 miles from the resort.

Think twice before renting a car. Hotel self-parking is currently listed at $50 per day, with valet at $75. For a five-night trip, parking alone can materially change the budget.

Group D.C. sightseeing into full days. National Harbor is separate from downtown, so returning to the hotel between every museum wastes time.

Reserve free passes anyway. “Free” does not always mean “walk right in.” Air & Space requires timed entry, and the National Zoo requires entry passes.

Bring genuinely comfortable shoes. Distances between Mall attractions look shorter on a map than they feel after several museums.

Before you book

Important things to know before booking

Location: Gaylord National is in National Harbor, Maryland—not downtown Washington. Build transportation time into every D.C. sightseeing day.

Parking: Current hotel pricing is $50/day self-parking and $75/day valet; confirm rates for your exact dates.

Room occupancy: Marriott’s booking system currently shows a maximum of six guests per room, but actual limits vary by room category.

Holiday activities: ICE! and other Christmas experiences begin November 14, 2026; do not assume every activity is included with your room.

Timed tickets: Reserve Air & Space and Zoo passes ahead even though admission is free.

Final thoughts

Washington, D.C. is a strong choice for families who want a trip that feels meaningful without needing to fill every day with expensive attractions. Between the Smithsonian museums, monuments, National Zoo, Mount Vernon, and National Harbor, five nights gives you enough time to see the highlights without rushing through everything.

The Gaylord National works especially well if you like having a more relaxing place to return to after a busy day in the city. The indoor pool, waterfront setting, restaurants, and large atrium give the trip a resort feel that you will not get from most downtown hotels.

The biggest consideration is location. You will need to plan transportation into Washington rather than simply walking out the hotel door to the museums. But for families who like combining sightseeing with some downtime, that tradeoff may be well worth it.

If you travel in the fall, expect comfortable sightseeing weather. If you visit from mid-November through December, Gaylord’s Christmas experiences can add an entirely different layer to the trip.
