Why it made this week's list
The interesting booking window right now is late November through early December. Guanacaste’s heaviest Pacific rains typically fall in September and October; November is the transition toward the dry season, while December begins the sunnier stretch. That creates a useful middle ground: greener scenery and potentially softer hotel pricing before Christmas and New Year crowds arrive.
There is another seasonal reason to look now. Leatherback turtle nesting season around Las Baulas National Marine Park runs roughly October through February, although SINAC currently says turtle observation is not being offered, so families should not build the trip around seeing turtles without checking again.
Our search window: late November or the first half of December, avoiding Thanksgiving week when possible.
Why families may like it
This trip works especially well for families who want Costa Rica adventure without changing hotels every few nights. Playa Conchal gives you a beach day whenever nobody feels like touring, while Tamarindo, mangroves, wildlife parks and volcanic landscapes are reachable as day trips.
The resort has two-queen rooms, larger suites and multi-bedroom residences, plus kayaking, snorkeling, golf, recreation and a complimentary kids club. Marriott does not currently publish the kids club's age limits on its main site, so confirm them before depending on childcare.
The biggest consideration is transportation. This is not a destination where you walk out of the hotel into a town full of restaurants and attractions. Excursions require a driver, rental car or organized tour. Families wanting nonstop slides and children's attractions may also find the W quieter than a traditional family mega-resort.
Hotel overview
W Costa Rica sits inside the forested Reserva Conchal community beside Playa Conchal. It feels more like a stylish nature retreat than a conventional family resort: bold design, tropical vegetation, ocean views and easy access to one of Guanacaste's standout beaches. The hotel has 150 rooms and suites, including two-queen configurations, plunge-pool suites and private three-, four- and five-bedroom residences.
Days can revolve around the beach, snorkeling, kayaking, golf or the resort's programming. The WET Deck is generally adults-only, except during designated festive and Easter periods, an important detail for families. AWAY Spa gives parents or grandparents another option for downtime.
Dining includes five on-site restaurants/outlets, with Latin American, Asian-inspired and beach-club options. The hotel is not automatically all-inclusive with every rate. Marriott currently sells a separate “Sip & Savor” package covering meals and selected drinks, valid for eligible stays through December 31, 2026. Always check exactly what your rate includes.
Best for
Adventure-focused families — Use one comfortable resort as a base for volcanoes, wildlife, zip lines and snorkeling. Less ideal if long road excursions are difficult with your children.
Families with school-age children — Beach days, kayaking, nature and the kids club create an easy mix. Confirm kids-club ages and hours before arrival.
Families with teenagers — Zip lining, snorkeling, surfing and national parks give teens more to do than simply sit by a pool. There is no prominently advertised dedicated teen club.
Multigenerational families — Multi-bedroom residences, beach time and excursions with different activity levels work well for grandparents and children traveling together. Residences can be considerably more expensive.
Couples with children who value adult time — Spa, dining and the adults-only WET Deck offer genuine grown-up spaces.
Costa Rica
Guanacaste feels very different from the rainforest image many first-time visitors have of Costa Rica. Along the northwestern Pacific coast, tropical dry forest meets long beaches, small surf towns and volcanic mountains. Around Playa Conchal, you can combine a true resort vacation with wildlife and adventure without moving hotels.
Start locally. Playa Conchal is the beach outside the resort, while nearby Brasilito feels more local and casual. Tamarindo adds surf schools, restaurants and access to the mangrove-filled Tamarindo Estuary and Las Baulas National Marine Park.
For a bigger outing, Rincón de la Vieja National Park introduces children to Costa Rica's volcanic side: steaming vents, boiling mud, forest trails and waterfalls. Driving is roughly 1¾ hours each way from the Reserva Conchal area, so make it a full-day trip.
You should absolutely explore beyond the resort—but not every day. With seven nights, two substantial excursion days plus one shorter Tamarindo or mangrove outing creates a better rhythm than spending the entire week in a vehicle.

1. Playa Conchal — Swim, snorkel and inspect the shell-covered shoreline. Best: all ages. Time: 2–4 hours. Right at the resort.
2. Tamarindo Estuary — Guided mangrove boat trips offer chances to spot birds, reptiles and monkeys. Best: 5+. Allow half a day.
3. Diamante Eco Adventure Park — Zip lines plus wildlife attractions. Zip lining takes about two hours; riders must weigh 60–280 lb, and under-10s need an accompanying adult. Reserve ahead.
4. Rincón de la Vieja — Walk among volcanic steam and bubbling mud. Best: 7+ comfortable walkers. Full day; tickets must be bought online.
5. Resort kayaking/snorkeling — Easy low-travel adventure for a quieter day. Equipment/availability varies.
6. Tamarindo beach town — Surf lesson, casual lunch and sunset. Good flexible half-day option.
7. Resort Games Room — Useful rainy-day break with nature and sustainability-themed activities.

Best time to visit
Guanacaste's dry season generally runs December through March, with April transitioning into rain. May through October is the wetter Pacific season, and September–October are usually the rainiest months. November is transitional, which makes it particularly interesting for travelers willing to trade a possible afternoon shower for greener scenery and potentially lighter crowds.
Rain during green season frequently builds in the afternoon, so schedule hiking, wildlife tours and boat trips early. Ocean temperatures stay inviting: historical Playa Conchal averages are about 83°F in November and 82°F in December.
Christmas/New Year and major school-break weeks generally bring the strongest demand, while May, June and November can offer a better weather/value compromise.

Family travel tips
Fly into Liberia (LIR). Marriott lists Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport about 62 km from the hotel. Driving is roughly 75 minutes under normal conditions, and the W does not provide a complimentary airport shuttle.
Prearrange transportation with car seats. If you are not renting a car, confirm appropriate child seats with your transfer company before arrival.
Front-load outdoor excursions. During green season, mornings generally give you the best chance of completing hikes and boat trips before afternoon rain.
Do not assume meals are included. Confirm whether you have room-only, breakfast or Marriott's Sip & Savor package before comparing prices.
Pack for sun and rain. Lightweight rain jackets, reef-friendly sun protection, insect repellent and quick-drying shoes are more useful than dressy resort clothing.

Family pool access: WET Deck is normally adults-only, with exceptions during festive and Easter periods. Confirm which pools will be available to children during your stay.
Kids club: Marriott confirms a complimentary kids club but does not publish a current age range on the main hotel pages. Ask the hotel for ages, opening hours and whether advance reservations are needed.
Transfers: LIR is about 62 km away and the hotel does not operate its own shuttle. Arrange transportation in advance.
Weather: September and October are Guanacaste's wettest period; November is transitional rather than reliably dry.
Final thoughts
W Costa Rica – Reserva Conchal is a strong choice for families who want the beauty and adventure of Costa Rica without spending the entire trip moving from hotel to hotel. You can spend one day snorkeling off Playa Conchal, another exploring volcanic landscapes or wildlife, and still have plenty of time to slow down at the resort.
The biggest advantage is the balance. There is enough nearby to make the trip feel adventurous, but the resort is appealing enough that taking a completely unscheduled beach day never feels like you are missing out.
For a 7-night stay, we would resist the temptation to fill every day with excursions. Choose two or three experiences your family is most excited about, then leave room for the beach, kayaking, long meals, and those afternoons when everyone would rather stay put.
